Raider Nation: interview with Wayne Mabry a.k.a. Violator

Raiders fans are some of the most passionate fans in sports. They’re a colorful group. Members of the Raider Nation cheer loudly and wear silver and black outfits, but some of the most devoted Raiders fans take their fandom a step further dressing up in eccentric and intimidating costumes on game day. Many die-hard fans, especially in the famous fan section of the Oakland Coliseum known as the Black Hole, have created alter egos for their characters.

Raiders Italia had the privilege to interview some of the most notorious Raiders fans. Our first guest is Wayne Mabry, also known as “Violator.”

(NOTA: la versione in lingua italiana dell’intervista la trovate in questa pagina)

Raiders Italia: Who is Wayne Mabry in the “real life”?

Wayne Mabry: Just a very Blessed man!

RI: How old are you, where do you live and what do you do for a living?

WM: I’m 60, live in Moreno Valley, CA. Retired Union carpenter.

RI: When did you start dressing up as Violator?

WM: The year was 1991. The VIOLATOR’s persona is a fusion of Pirate and football spirits and the result is what you’ve seen evolve over the last 26+ years.

RI: How long does it take to become Violator?

WM: The transformation takes about 2 hours.

RI: Given your strong passion for the Raiders, did you ever have Violator take on Wayne’s place in real life?

WM: Yes, he’s COME OUT on a few occasions!

RI: Can you explain what makes the Black Hole so special?

WM: The BLACK HOLE is our version of a Marsh Pit ready for action at all times!

RI: Is there another fan base that can be considered at the same level of the Raider Nation?

WM: In my opinion NO, we live it as a LIFESTYLE!

RI: With the team’s move to Las Vegas now official, will the Black Hole vanish?

WM: Are YOU KIDDIN me!!! Hell NO!!!

RI: What is your fondest Raiders-related memory?

WM: 2002 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP game beating the Titans!!! It was a high point because it put us back in the Super Bowl!!

RI: Who is your favorite player?

WM: I love them all the same, hell they’re RAIDERS baby!!!!

RI: What do your family and friends think of your passion?

WM: They understand that what I have is Terminal and you #JUSTWASTA ride with me!!!!

RI: The Raiders have received approval from the National Football League to relocate the franchise from Oakland to Las Vegas. For the second time Oakland will lose his football team. We feel for the Oakland’s fans, we understand the emotional implications of this move, but looking at this from afar it seemed that the Raiders had no choice, that it was impossible to find a viable solution in Oakland. What’s your take on this?

WM: There were rumors about possibly relocating but they couldn’t get a deal finalized in Oakland, and in this business (NFL) the bottom line is MONEY!!

RI: The team will play at least two more season in Oakland. Do you think that they will sell out every home game or the stands will be half empty?

WM: I think there’s enough DIE-HARD fans who still want to be a part of the growth and prosperity of the RAIDER NATION, not worried about empty seats.

RI: After the move was approved in March, Mark Davis offered to refund Raiders fans if they felt they didn’t want to keep their season tickets. Did you applied for this refund? Do you know how many in the Black Hole have?

WM: Never entertained the idea of that, gotta have my THERAPY!!!

RI: Will you still be a fan of the Raiders?

RI: Will you travel to Las Vegas?

RI: Here in Italy there are often clashes between opposing fans, especially in soccer. Have you ever had any of these problems during Football matches?

WM: None that I’m aware of.

RI: Are you happy with McKenzie’s choices in the last Draft?

WM: I feel like we’ve improved Talent and Depth of our team.

RI: What are your expectations for the 2017 season? What can this team achieve?

WM: Fully expect us to continue to GROW and DOMINATE the AFC West and eventually winning our 4th Lombardi!!

RI: What are, in your opinion, the strengths and weaknesses of the team? What are the remaining holes on the Raiders?

WM: Only time played will truly answer that question!!!!

RI: Marshawn Lynch came out of retirement to play for his hometown Raiders. What are your thoughts about this? Will the running game improve with him in the backfield?

WM: I admire Lynch’s desire to be a part of the RAIDER NATION, would you want to FACE our backfield!!!

RI: Is Jack Del Rio the coach who can lead the Raiders to a Super Bowl win?

WM: Why settle for ONE, I see him leading us to several!!

RI: Thank you very much for your time, Wayne! Hey Raider Nation, you can check Wayne’s website and shop, Modo Sports, at
